The area known as Knightsbridge today has a long history that dates as far back as the 10th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the area was a haunt for highwaymen and robbers preying on travellers. It was in the late 18th and 19th centuries that Knightsbridge began to develop and along with it the opening of the Harrods and Harvey Nichols department stores in the late 19th century. Over the decades, Knightsbridge developed into a prestigious and sought after retail location that continues to flourish.
Harrods is Knightsbrige’s most famous department store and well known in London and throughout the UK. Its history goes back to the 1850s, initially operating as a small shop and eventually into a department store in the 1880s. Today, Harrods is a huge department store occupying seven floors with over 5,000 employees, 330 departments and 32 restaurants! The department store is hugely popular with tourists and on peak days receives over 300,000 customers. The department store offers a wide range of quality merchandises including clothing, sporting gear, accessories, electronics, jewellery and beauty products.

Another famous department store in Knightsbridge is Harvey Nichols, a stylish cousin of Harrods. Its history here began in the 1830s, initially a simple shop selling linen and eventually opened as a department store in the 1880s. Harvey Nichols offers a range of luxury goods from top-notch brands that include fashion, jewellery, accessories, furnishing, kitchenware and beauty products. Gucci, Valentino, Chanel, Givenchy and Ralph Lauren are just some of brands carried by Harvey Nichols.

Beyond Harrods and Harvey Nichols are the upmarket retailers and fashion houses found mainly along Brompton Road and Sloane Street. British fashion retailer Topshop and British fashion house Burberry are both located on Brompton Road. Italian luxury brand Gucci and French clothing company are also on Brompton Road. There is a higher concentration of luxury stores along Sloane Street that include Prada, Gorgio Armani, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Dior and Roberto Cavalli to name a few.
London Underground's Knightsbridge Station (serving the Piccadilly Line) stops on Brompton Road and situated between Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Slightly further but within walking distance are South Kensington Station (serving the District, Circle and Piccadilly Lines) and Sloane Square Station (serving the District and Circle Lines). London red buses on routes 9, 10, 14, 19, 22, 52, 74, 137, 414, 452 and C1 stop in Knightsbridge.
