Loganair operates daily flights between Barra Airport and Glasgow Airport (1 hr 15 mins). Glasgow Airport offers connections to other destinations in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Europe. Since Barra Airport uses the beach as its runway, planes can only land and take off during low tide. Therefore, arrivals and departures from the airport have a flexible timetable since the sea completely covers the landing strip twice a day during high tide.
Barra Airport is a small but functional airport with a modern and cosy setting. Airport facilities include a check-in desk, departure lounge, payphone and a cafe. The Barra Airport Cafe is highly recommended and a great place for snacks, meals and drinks including great barista coffee. The cafe not only welcomes passengers but also popular with the locals.
Parking is free at the airport and there is a bus service travelling between the airport and Castlebay, the main settlement on the island. Taxis must be booked in advance and taxi companies on the island include Barra Taxi, Campbell Taxi, Dans Taxi and Barra Island Tours. Car rentals are available from Car Hire Hebrides and Barra Car Hire and advised to book in advance.
