Belfast International Airport, Northern Ireland

Belfast International Airport (IATA: BFS) is located about 21 km (13 miles) northwest from the city of Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. It’s a medium size airport and the 10th busiest in the UK handling 5.8 million passengers in 2017. However, Belfast International Airport is the busiest airport in Northern Ireland handling more flights and connections than its rival George Best Belfast City Airport. The airport comprises of a single runway and one passenger terminal for arrivals and departures and equipped with a range of services and facilities for the convenience of the passengers. Ground transport from Belfast International Airport includes express buses, taxis and car rentals.

 
 

Airlines & Flights

Belfast International Airport handles flights to over 50 destinations mainly within the UK and Europe. EasyJet and Ryanair are the main airlines at the airport, operating flights on both the domestic and European routes. Thomas Cook and TUI Airways are the main airlines operating seasonal flights to many European holiday destinations. Other airlines include BH Air, Jet2.com, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Virgin Atlantic and Wizz Air.

The busiest flights at the airport on the domestic routes are between London (Gatwick, Luton and Stansted Airports), Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle. The 10 busiest flights on the international routes are Alicante, Amsterdam, Faro, Krakow, Lanzarote, Malaga, Newark, Palma, Paris and Tenerife. Additionally there are seasonal flights between the United States (Las Vegas and Orlando), Mexico (Cancun) and Cuba (Varadero).

Airport Facilities

Free Wi-Fi access is available for passengers in the departure lounge for up to 2 hours. International Currency Exchange (ICE) operates two desks at the airport, one located in the landside departure area and the other in the international arrivals baggage reclaims area. The service opens Monday-Sunday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and foreign currencies exchanged include the euro, US dollar and Swiss franc. There are also cash machines (ATMs) located at various points in the airport.

There’s a nice choice of food outlets in the airport’s departure lounge including Burger King, Starbucks, Fed and Watered, Caffe Ritazza and The Strangford Grill. Shops include Aelia Duty Free, Discover Belfast for gifts, Traveller for travel essentials and WHSmith for magazines, newspapers, confectionery, snacks and drinks. There is the premium service Causeway Lounge for those who wish to relax before their flight. There are also baby-changing facilities in the terminal.

Ground Transport

Belfast International Airport is located about 10 km (6 miles) from Antrim railway station. You can take a taxi or Ulsterbus 109A from the airport to the station where trains depart to Belfast, Lisburn and Londonderry (Derry). Alternatively, you can take the Airport Express 300 bus from the airport to the Belfast Europa Bus Centre located in Belfast’s city centre and near the Europa Hotel – intermediate stops include Templepatrick and Royal Avenue.

The International Airport Taxi Company is the official taxi operator at Belfast International Airport. The taxi rank is located outside the terminal building and operates 24 hours throughout the week. Only taxis approved by the airport can use the taxi rank. Taxis here use the meter and a ‘share-a-taxi scheme’ to Belfast is available for passengers who wish to use it. Car rental companies at the airport include Alamo, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and National.
