Gatwick Airport (London), England

Gatwick Airport (IATA: LGW) is the second busiest airport in London and the UK (after London’s Heathrow Airport) as well as the eighth busiest in Europe, handling over 45 million passengers in 2017. The airport is located in West Sussex and about 48 km (30 miles) south of Central London. Gatwick Airport handles domestic flights and internationals flights mostly between destinations within Europe. Gatwick Airport operates a single runway and comprises of the North and South Terminals connected by a 1.2 km (0.8 mile) automated two-way people mover. Ground transport from the airport includes coaches, taxis, trains and car rentals.


Airlines & Flights

Over 50 airlines operate at Gatwick Airport including full service airlines, low-cost airlines and charter flights. The airport is a base for full service airlines British Airways and Virgin Atlantic and low-cost airlines EasyJet and Norwegian Air Shuttle. It’s also a base for charter flight operators Thomas Cook Airlines and TUI Airways flying to many holiday destinations. Other full service airlines at Gatwick Airport include Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Royal Air Maroc and Turkish Airlines. Other low-cost airlines include Ryanair, WestJet, Wizz Air, Wow Air and Vueling.

Most international flights at Gatwick Airport are within Europe but there are a number of flights between destinations in the United States, Canada, Caribbean Islands, North Africa and Asia. Major connections on the international routes include Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dubai, Dublin, Geneva, Madrid, Malaga and Tenerife. Aurigny, British Airways, EasyJet, Flybe and Ryanair are the main airlines at Gatwick Airport flying on the domestic routes. Destinations connected on the domestic routes include Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey.

Airport Facilities

Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout Gatwick Airport for up to 90 minutes. There are free charging points for your mobile devices located before and after security. There are also ChargeBox kiosks in the departure lounges where you can leave and charge your phone in a secure locker. For the hungry or just a snack, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes located in the North and South Terminals. You can find cash machines (ATMs) situated in the North and South Terminals (before and after security). Moneycorp operates foreign currency exchange counters and ATMs located across Gatwick Airport. Over 50 currencies are available for exchange including the pound sterling, euro, US, Canadian and Australian dollars. Baby changing facilities are available at strategic locations including the check-in, transfer and arrivals areas.

Ground Transport

Several train services stop at Gatwick Airport’s railway station located next to the South Terminal.

  • The Gatwick Express offers the fastest rail service to Central London, departing every 15 minutes to London Victoria Station (30-35 minutes). Gatwick Express also departs every 30 minutes to the seaside resort of Brighton.
  • Southern also operates services to London Victoria Station and Brighton but with more intermediate stops. There are also frequent train services by Southern to Eastbourne, Southampton and Portsmouth.
  • Thameslink operates services to London Bridge and St Pancras International (trains for the Eurostar) railway stations in London as well as to London Luton Airport.

From Gatwick Airport, there are coaches (long distance buses) travelling to London, Heathrow Airport, Brighton, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford, Cambridge and Norwich. National Express and EasyBus are the main coach operators at the airport. If you prefer a taxi, there are taxi ranks located outside the North and South Terminals. You can also call or book online from several operators for a minicab to pick you up at the airport. Car rental companies are located at both terminals including Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.
