Manchester Airport, England

Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN) is an international airport located about 14 km (9 miles) southwest of Manchester. The airport handled nearly 28 million passengers in 2017 and the third busiest in the UK after Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport. Manchester Airport comprises of two runways and three passenger terminals (Terminals 1, 2 and 3). A skylink with travelators connects Terminal 1 with Terminal 2 and a covered walkway connects Terminal 1 with Terminal 3 as well as the skylink. The skylink also connects the terminals to the airport’s railway station and the Radisson BLU Hotel. Ground transport from the airport includes trains, trams, coaches, taxis and car rentals.

Over 50 airlines operate at Manchester Airport, flying to over 190 destinations around the world. European airlines operating scheduled flights at the airport include EasyJet, Flybe, Iberia Express,, Ryanair and Vueling. Airlines flying charter flights include Thomas Cook and TUI Airways. North America airlines include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Airlines from other parts of the world include Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad, Oman Air and Qatar Airways.

Connections on the domestic routes include Aberdeen, Belfast, Cornwall, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guernsey, Inverness, Isle of Man, London, Norwich, Southampton and Stornoway. The 10 busiest international flights within Europe are Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Dublin, Faro, Frankfurt, Lanzarote, Munich, Palma de Mallorca, Paris and Tenerife. The five busiest international flights beyond Europe are Abu Dhabi and Dubai (UAE), Doha (Qatar), Dalaman (Turkey) and Orlando (United States).

Airport Facilities

Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout Manchester Airport’s three terminals for 60 minutes. You can access the premium service after the period and charged £5 for 1 hour and £10 for 24 hours. Travelex operates a foreign currency exchange desk located at all the terminals. There are also Travelex cash machines (ATMs) that dispense pound sterling and euro. There’s a post office at the arrivals hall in Terminal 1 and opens Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There’s a good choice of restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets in the departure and arrivals areas at all the three terminals. Outlets include Burger King, Starbucks, Frankie & Benny’s, Cafe Nero and Delice de France. There are also shops for some last minute retail therapy at the three terminals. Other amenities include left luggage (Terminal 1 and 2), baby changing facilities, premium lounges, multi-faith prayer rooms and designated outdoor smoking areas.

Ground Transport

Manchester Airport Station is an integrated transport hub (trains, trams, coaches and local buses) located between Terminals 1 and 2. Local and regional trains depart regularly from the Airport Station to Manchester Piccadilly Station in Manchester’s city centre as well as other locations in England, Scotland and Wales. Metrolink trams serve the Greater Manchester Area and there’s a service running directly from the Airport Station to Cornbrook Station in Manchester, which is an interchange station to other Metrolink lines.

National Express operates coach services from the airport to various locations in the UK including Blackpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and London. Local buses 43 and 44 take passengers from the airport to Manchester’s city centre. If you prefer a taxi, you will find them outside the arrivals halls of the three terminals. For car rentals, take a short ride on the free shuttle bus service to the Car Rental Village. Car rental companies here include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt.
