Newcastle Airport (IATA: NCL) is about 9 km (6 miles) from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne (commonly known as Newcastle). The airport primarily serves Newcastle and the counties of Tyneside, Northumberland and Wearside in North East England. It’s the 11th busiest airport in the UK, handling over 5 million passengers in 2017 and the second busiest in North England after Manchester Airport. The majority of the international flights at the airport are between destinations in Europe. The airport comprises of a single terminal with departures and arrivals as well as passenger facilities on the ground floor. Ground transport from Newcastle Airport includes trains, local buses, taxis and car rentals.

Tyne and Wear Metro (referred locally as the Metro) is a rapid transit and light rail system covering 60 stations in North East England serving Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. There is a Metro station located at Newcastle Airport with trains departing every 12 minutes to Newcastle’s city centre (25 mins) and Sunderland (55 mins).
