Wick Airport, Scotland

Wick John O' Groats Airport (IATA: WIC) is a small airport situated about 2 km (1.2 miles) north of the town of Wick in the far northeastern corner of mainland Scotland. The airport serves Caithness and Sutherland counties, a remote region of northern Scotland noted for its natural beauty, dramatic coastal scenery, fishing villages, castle ruins and many important archaeological sites. Wick is the main town in the region and with a population of around 7,000. The airport not only handles scheduled flights but also helicopters servicing offshore oil operations. Airport opening hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, 8:15 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays and 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sundays – closes on Saturdays.

Scottish airline Loganair operates daily flights (except Saturdays) between Wick Airport and Edinburgh Airport. From Edinburgh Airport, there are flight connections to other destinations in the UK and Europe. Another airline Flybe operates daily flights (except Saturdays) between Wick Airport and Aberdeen Airport, which also offers connection to other destinations in the UK and Europe.

Airport Facilities

Wick Airport is a small single storey airport and handled around 25,000 passengers in 2016. Airport facilities include check-in desks, departure lounge, payphone, baby-changing room, post box and cafe. The Airport Cafe serves a variety of snacks, soups, sandwiches, full meals and drinks.

Ground Transport

Parking is free at the airport and there are buses connecting the airport with the towns of Wick (2.5 km or 1.5 miles) and Thurso (32 km or 20 miles). From Wick, there are buses departing to the towns and villages in the region and as far as Inverness (165 km or 103 miles). Taxis can be booked in advance or upon arrival and taxi companies include Jimmy’s Taxis, Johnnie’s Taxis, Miller Taxis and Hugh’s Taxis. The airport is a short bus or taxi ride to Wick railway station with train connections to Thurso and Inverness.
